Why are Rabbit’s Feet so Lucky?

In most cultures, the foot of a rabbit is considered very lucky and as such is carried around as an amulet. The Rabbit’s foot is considered lucky in most parts of the world from Europe and North America, to China, Africa and South America. However, it is most likely that the belief originated amongst the ancient Celtic people living in Europe and most notably Britain from 600BC.

In these times the ancient Celts believed rabbit’s to be sacred mainly due to their belief that spirits inhabited the bodies of certain animals as well as them believing that man directly descended from some animals.

As the Celtic society developed, ancient European Celts adopted some of this older belief that rabbit’s were sacred because spirits inhabited their bodies. This was based upon the fact that rabbit’s spent a lot of time underground in their burrows and the Celts believed as such the rabbits were inhabited by ‘numina’ which were underground spirits which the rabbit’s communicated with. Rabbit’s were also considered sacred by the Ancient Celt’s due to their prowess in the field of reproduction. Celt’s believed that the spirits ‘numina’ intended for Rabbit’s to be revered as symbols of reproduction. To be put on a pedestal due to their high volume of reproduction and of health and prosperity.

There are other reasons the Celts considered a Rabbit’s foot to be lucky. One dates back to before the Celts, stemming from the pre-Celtic tradition of hunter clan rites of passage for young members of the clan.  Young males were initially introduced to hunting rabbit’s before any other animal as an introduction to his hunter’s apprenticeship. When successful, a hind foot of the rabbit hunted would be presented to them in a ceremony that would introduce the boy into manhood.

The belief that the Rabbit’s Foot possesses the power to bring good luck is also very strong in African and Chinese cultures and also plays a big part in North American Folklore which may have initially originated in ‘Hoodoo’ the system of African-American folk magic.

About Four Leaf Clovers

It’s no secret that the four leaf clover is considered to bring good fortune to its bearer, but why exactly is it considered to be so lucky?

Well the Four Leaf Clover is a mutation that forms from the White Clover Plant otherwise known as trifolium repens. The white Clover plant usually produces three leaf clovers, however mutations do occur and four leaf clovers occasionally appear. The white clover plant can actually produce mutations of more than four leaves, with the most ever found being a 21 leaf clover! However, this mutation is VERY rare, it is said that there is roughly 10,000 three leaf clovers to every one four leaf clover! This is why the four leaf clover is considered to be so lucky.

The four leaves on a four leaf clover are said to represent different things according to legend, these are as follows:-

1st Leaf represents HOPE

2nd Leaf represents FAITH

3rd Leaf represents LOVE

4th Leaf represents LUCK
